2019 – McLAREN 570S ‘RACING THROUGH THE AGES’ BY MSO
McLaren dealer in Beverly Hills has created a limited edition in collaboration with McLaren’s MSO division, in charge of special orders from the British manufacturer. Called ‘Racing Through the Ages’, this collection of models tries to honor with a series of unique decoration works and their combinations of colors, distinct periods of the British brand’s sporting history.In total there are 6 units, 3 copies of the McLaren 570S Coupe and three others of the McLaren 570S Spider, and each of them receives the three color combinations that comprise this collection: Muriwai White, Papaya Spark and Sarthe Gray.All specimens have special features from the McLaren MSO catalog, such as the large rear fixed aerofoil, which was installed by the dealer itself and the GT4 longitudinal strips, which though they may not look like the same, are the same for all units. They also feature the optional Defined Black Pack, 10-spoke super-lightweight forged wheels in glossy black finish and the MSO Defined Titanium Supersports exhaust system.Inside we find the same GT4 tracks that were integrated into the seats. We also find the MSO logos and the usual numbered and allusive nameplates for the limited edition.The Muriwai White color units allude to Muriwai Beach in New Zealand, where Bruce McLaren competed for the first time at just 15 years of age. Muriwai was also the name chosen by Bruce McLaren for the blue and white house he built in Woking.The Papaya Spark orange finishes pay homage to the orange color that was used by the New Zealander in all his competition models in the 60s and 70s of last century. Achieving great success in multiple categories on both sides of the Atlantic, such as Formula 1, the Indy 500 and the spectacular Can-Am.Finally, the Sarthe Gray dark gray units pay tribute to McLaren’s victory with the F1 GTR in the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours. 2020 – McLAREN SENNA GTR
Less than a year after being presented as a prototype at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, McLaren Senna GTR, McLaren Automotive’s most radical race car, is presented in its final and complete form. This is the racing version of the supersport that bears the name of three-time champion Formula 1 Ayrton Senna and was presented last October in the Hall of São Paulo, being the biggest attraction of the Brazilian event.Evolution of the McLaren Senna GTR Concept, presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the current model is faster, lighter and more powerful than the street version, bringing the dynamism of McLaren Senna to new heights of performance on the tracks outside of Formula 1. The engine V8 of 4.0 liters and two turbos generates 825 hp of maximum power. With a weight of 1,188 kg, it has an incredible weight-to-power ratio of 694 hp per ton.The 75 units of McLaren’s newest and most exclusive Ultimate Series model have already been sold in a few weeks and are being delivered from September to lucky owners who can run or just have fun on the slopes. They will be made to order in Woking, UK, priced at £ 1.1 million plus tax, equivalent to £ 5.5 million plus tax.The model fulfils the promise of offering the power of a hypercar allied to the accessible handling, with aerodynamics and chassis of a thoroughbred. A result is a machine that can run on circuits faster than any McLaren out of Formula 1, giving its owners, of all skill levels, an unmatched driving experience. The new GTR takes the McLaren Senna – the most radical, bold and complete street model ever produced by the British manufacturer – several steps forward in the field of the final performance. Without regulatory restrictions to run on roads or race tracks, the new Ultimate Series car boasts incredible 1,000 kg of aerodynamic downforce as well as suspension derived from the McLaren GT3 race program. The McLaren Senna GTR succeeded the legendary McLaren F1 GTR in 1995 (Le Mans winner) and the McLaren P1 GTR in 2015 and was inspired by three-time world champion Ayrton Senna. Each Mclaren Senna GTR offers its owner virtually unlimited customization opportunities through the McLaren Special Operations Center (MSO), ranging from paint colours to unique multicoloured paints.
The McLaren Senna GTR is equipped with the most extreme version of McLaren’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The unit with electronically controlled twin-scroll turbos produces 825 hp with a torque of 800 Nm. The extra 25 hp over the engine was achieved by recalibrating the engine control and removing the secondary catalytic converter to reduce back pressure. Removal of the catalyst also enhances the auditory experience of driving the McLaren Senna GTR.The Concept exhaust system, which came out through the side pipes just in front of the rear wheels, was replaced by a more conventional rear exhaust system in production cars with the same McLaren Senna location. The change was made for engineering reasons: the rear exhaust pipes provide the shortest and fastest route for the exhaust to escape, saving weight and reducing complexity.With 825 hp and a weight of 1,188 kg, the weight-to-power ratio is 694 hp per ton, comfortably exceeding not only the McLaren Senna ‘regular’, but all other McLaren Automotive cars.Three powertrain modes are available for the McLaren Senna GTR driver: Wet, Track and Race. The new Wet setting, which provides greater support for ESP and ABS electronic systems, is particularly suitable for use with wet tires. The transmission, which includes a ‘Launch Control’ function, is the same reversible idle (SSG) and 7-speed reverse gearbox, already acclaimed in McLaren Senna.
The McLaren Senna GTR generates astonishing levels of downforce, reaching over 1,000 kg, a significant increase over the 800 kg developed by McLaren Senna at 250 km / h. This means that the McLaren Senna GTR can have an equivalent amount of downforce to the McLaren Senna at 15% lower speed while still benefiting from reduced drag.The GTR’s aerodynamic package offers positive effects on high-speed corners, but also on low-speed curves and braking, making the car even less sensitive to slope and improving stability in all situations.The new front splitter features a raised central section to throw air under the car back to the reconfigured rear diffuser. The efficiency of the diffuser was optimized by the new rear wing – an LMP1 style design – highly effective in guiding the air around the rear of the car.Compared to the standard McLaren Senna wing installed in the 2018 GTR Concept, the McLaren Senna GTR wing was redesigned and relocated, being pushed back. This new position, ‘free of road car’ restrictions, allows the wing to be attached to the diffuser, making the best use of the air flowing in the rear of the car. The wing can be ‘paralyzed’ at full speed thanks to an automatic drag reduction system (DRS).
Body and structure
The McLaren carbon fiber domain combines lightweight with immense structural rigidity. The McLaren Senna GTR is one of the lightest cars McLaren Automotive ever produced, with just 1,188 kg. The central structure of the model is a carbon fiber safety cell with integrated cage. Like the McLaren Senna, the front chassis and engine chassis are made of aluminum.Larger than the McLaren Senna, the GTR is 34 mm lower, 1,195 mm high. The front has increased by 77 mm to 1,731 mm; and the rear is wider at 68 mm, at 1686 mm. Larger mudguards accommodate 19-inch wheels with center bolt.The McLaren Senna GTR is 10 kg less than the McLaren Senna, which is already quite light, despite the wider body and track equipment such as radio, fire extinguisher and data logger. For this, McLaren Senna comfort items have been eliminated in the GTR, such as touch screen and audio system. The air conditioning was maintained.The windshield and side sliding windows are made of polycarbonate. Soft-closing doors are equipped with a manual release mechanism. The fuel filler is bump-dump type, in the style of race cars.Exterior elements in carbon fiber have a bright finish as standard. The finish of the wheels can be shiny black, silver race or dark graffiti. The color of the brackets and brake calipers can be specified in Azure Blue, Red or McLaren Orange at no additional cost.
Chassis and transmission
The incredible driving experience the GTR offers is not exclusively for professional riders. The aim of McLaren engineers was simple: to ensure that 95% of the car’s performance could be accessed by 95% of drivers. This is achieved by combining aerodynamic power with the new suspension derived from the McLaren GT3 race program.The variable suspension control of the McLaren Senna, which allows different heights for road and track, is superfluous for a car only for tracks. To save weight and reduce complexity, it has been replaced by aluminum double wishbones, springs, uprights and stabilizer bars developed from the suspension of the McLaren GT3 cars. Adjustable four-way dampers are installed, as well as solid bushings and adjustable swivel.By not having to comply with the rules of GT3, which restrict race cars to 18-inch wheels, the Senna GTR gets 19-inch wheels like Senna. Ultra-Lightweight forged alloy wheels are also wider than the current GT3 standards allow, being 10J at the front and 13J at the rear. The 19-inch tires are of the Pirelli brand, size 285/650 in the front and 325/705 in the rear.The larger wheels mean even larger brakes than those installed in a McLaren 720S GT3 car. Based on the McLaren Senna brake system, the Senna GTR is equipped with six-piston four-piston calipers forged aluminum in the front and four pistons in the rear, working with 390-millimeter ceramic-carbon discs featuring cooling vanes machined.Like the McLaren Senna, the Senna GTR also has an air brake function on the rear wing, which in this case was designed to deliver a maximum 20% greater deceleration with slick tires.The model is equipped with many electronic driver assistance systems including anti-locking locking, traction control and dynamic electronic stability control. In addition, it has speed control; systems that monitor tire pressure and tire temperature; brake pads wear sensors; brake disc cleaning technology and anti-collision radar.
Inside the McLaren Senna GTR
As it is a car only for tracks, the rear has no airbags, infotainment system and other steering features. There is a satin finish for the interior carbon fiber elements, the sills are covered with black carpet – the only carpet in the car – and the ceiling is in Alcantara. The dashboard displays the main data in the simplest forms, with a row of gearshift LEDs along the top edge. An additional central screen, replacing the McLaren Senna touch screen, shows the view of the rear camera.The racing wheel is based on the steering wheel of the GT3 car, but with different functionality for the buttons. The steering wheel is adjustable, can be removed quickly and has the integrated shift paddles.The Senna GTR is equipped with a pit-to-car radio and two on-board cameras: one facing the front and the other in the cabin. There are simple on-off buttons for on and off, track speed control and dynamic setting for light rain. As with the McLaren Senna, the engine start button is mounted on the roof. And when that big red button is pressed, the McLaren Senna GTR kicks in, ready to deliver a lot of excitement on the tracks.
